Employment agreement ratified

Union members yesterday voted to ratify a Collective Employment Agreement between Ports of Auckland and the Maritime Union of New Zealand – Local 13 (MUNZ).

Managing Director Jens Madsen is delighted that an agreement has been ratified.

“The stability and surety that yesterday’s agreement will create is good news for all involved,” Mr Madsen said.

“The agreement will deliver a fair deal for staff, a settled internal operating environment and ongoing commercial stability for the company.”

“I’d like to thank our customers for their support and patience during what have been protracted and complex negotiations,” he said.

Ports of Auckland to sell Queens Wharf

Queens Wharf & the Auckland waterfront from above Auckland city.Ports of Auckland has agreed to sell Queens Wharf to the Government and Auckland Regional Council for $40m, subject to approval by the Auckland Transitional Authority.

Mr Madsen said Ports of Auckland would vacate Queens Wharf by April 2010.

“For Ports of Auckland, the sale of Queens Wharf is something we have been working towards for a number of years, as flagged in our 2008 Port Development Plan. We are very pleased that agreement has been reached,” he said.

Mr Madsen said the port would use the sale proceeds to reinvest in replacement cargo-handling capacity and facilities.

“The cargo volumes currently handled on Queens Wharf will be transferred to the Bledisloe terminal, Captain Cook and Marsden wharves,” Mr Madsen said.

“I can reassure those of our customers currently using Queens Wharf that new arrangements for handling their cargo will be in place in due course.”

Princes Wharf will continue to be used as Auckland’s primary cruise terminal until a new facility is built on Queens Wharf.  Under the terms of the deal, Ports of Auckland will continue to service cruise ships from the new terminal on Queens Wharf.

Pilot boat on pest patrol

A helicopter ladden with bait heads towards Rangitoto Island.Ports of Auckland recently assisted the Department of Conservation (DOC) in the most complex island pest eradication they have ever attempted - removing animal pests such as rats, mice, rabbits and stoats from Rangitoto and Motutapu Islands.

Last weekend (20 June), the Port’s Akarana pilot boat completed a full-day tour of duty around islands, joining several other vessels in helping to deter any public traffic not aware of the 10-day closure imposed for an aerial bait drop exercise.

Managing Director Jens Madsen said the company was excited to be involved in such an inspiring environmental project.

“When we heard about this major exercise, right on Ports of Auckland’s doorstep in the Hauraki Gulf, we wanted to lend a hand in any way we could.”

He said Ports of Auckland also had a special affinity with Rangitoto Island - a well-known landmark that  welcomes ships and their crew calling Auckland and which features in the company's logo.

Customs on the move

The Customs x-ray facility is now located at the Bledisloe container terminal.  Transport operators delivering containers for x-ray should do so via Tinley Street Gate.

The move assists Ports of Auckland in preparing to consolidate container terminal operations over Fergusson.  The additional space provided will allow for a new configuration at the truck parking area, including an additional lane and kiosks.
