Industrial Action Update

This page is the source for the latest updates and information on the industrial action situation at Ports of Auckland.

Ports of Auckland has announced that it is progressing a proposal to contract out labour at the port, while continuing to participate in collective bargaining with the Maritime Union of New Zealand (Local 13).

Ports of Auckland have received several strike notices from Maritime Union of New Zealand:

• The current strike began at 0700 hours Wednesday 15th February and will continue until 0700 hours Wednesday 22nd February 2012. This strike is targeted at our internal wharf shuttle service and in particular CONLINXX who deliver this service. The Maritime Union have stated that their members will refuse to handle containers that have been moved around the Port using CONLINXX Limited owned or operated trucks. It will not affect other port operations. Port CEO, Tony Gibson said that port operations would be maintained and the company is working with CONLINXX to minimise any impact to our customers.

• The next strike notice period starts at 0700 hours Friday 24th February until 0700 hours Friday 2nd March. This strike will involve the complete withdrawal of MUNZ labour from the port.

• A further strike notice for the period beginning 0700 hours Friday 2nd March until 0700 hours Friday 9 March has been received. This strike will involve the complete withdrawal on MUNZ labour from the port.

Ports of Auckland will do its utmost to keep the port operating using non-union labour, including maintaining R&D and servicing ships where possible. We will also continue to work with customers, other ports and the road transport industry to help minimise the impact of stoppages on cargo owners and consumers.

Third party contractors already operate the conventional (non-container terminal) port facilities in Auckland. These and other services, including the on-dock empty container depot, multi-cargo wharves (Jellicoe, Freyberg, Captain Cook, Marsden), cruise business, vehicle import trade, marine services, Onehunga seaport, Wiri Inland Port and Seafuels barge Awanuia, will remain open for business during industrial action.
